Oh my gosh! Can you even imagine what it was like to get that at the very height of the war...knowing your own son was in the thick of everything? NOT knowing exactly what it means when it says SERIOUSLY WOUNDED??? My heart is breaking all over again...
Grandma must have been devastated. At this time, all of her sons, except the youngest one, were all in the war all over the world. She must have been afraid that she'd get a telegram like this every day!
This would impact their relationship for the rest of their lives...every argument would snap them back in time...and this explains what your mother meant when she would tell me, "you know you wouldn't want to live without him...". Every time she'd intercede in a big argument between your brother and me she end with that. I know every time she felt like just leaving or running away or letting your dad have it good she would be reliving that day she wasn't sure he would live and if so how badly would he be once he recovered. Nothing would ever be as important to HER as HIM living through what he lived through back then. Your mother was (and I told her this on many occasions) someone I LEARNED to admire...and now I see where she got all her training and wisdom...this is so special.
It sure sheds a lot of light on each of them individually, what they experienced throughout the war. And also what it meant to them later, both of them having gone through all this.
